Fires in Santa Catarina Deteriorate Air Quality

During the last week, 1613 fires were reported in Nuevo León, primarily in vacant lots across different municipalities in the metropolitan area. Armandina Valdez, director of the Air Quality Agency in the State, highlighted the importance of prevention given the conditions that can deteriorate air quality.

In particular, Valdez mentioned a fire that occurred the previous day in a lumberyard in Santa Catarina, which significantly affected air quality in that area. She emphasized the need for support from all citizens to prevent fires, many of which are intentionally caused or result from activities like burning bonfires to extract materials.

Despite unfavorable conditions, Valdez pointed out a drastic reduction in the number of wildfires and the amount of hectares affected from 2021 to 2025, due to the joint efforts of the Government, Civil Protection, and citizen collaboration in prevention efforts.

Specifically, the municipalities with the highest number of fires were Juárez, followed by Santa Catarina, García, Monterrey, Escobedo, Guadalupe, and Apodaca. Valdez stressed the importance of prevention and timely reporting of fires to contain their rapid spread, particularly in conditions of strong winds.

Among the highlighted incidents was the fire on Cerro del Fraile, located between Escobedo and El Carmen, where the coordinated action of Civil Protection and Firefighters prevented its extension. Despite the challenges, fires were managed and mitigated in a timely manner, although it is necessary to continue reinforcing prevention measures and raising citizen awareness to protect the natural environment and air quality in the region.
